I love boring days.
I really do.
There is just something nice about waking up and realizing we have absolutely nowhere to be. Nobody needs to get dressed by a certain time. I don’t have to pack anything. I don’t have to make sure everybody has shoes. There is nowhere we are supposed to be and really nothing we are supposed to be doing.
It is basically a fend for yourself kind of day.
Within reason, obviously. I do still have small children. 😂
But I don’t have anything planned for them. I am not trying to entertain anybody. We are just home, and they have to figure out what they want to do with themselves.
And I actually really like that.
I feel like those are the days where I get to see what my kids truly enjoy. Because I am not telling them what we are doing next. They just… come up with something.
Sometimes it makes absolutely no sense.
They will drag out some random toy they haven’t touched in forever. Or go outside and suddenly a stick is the greatest thing they have ever owned. A game gets invented that I don’t understand. Somebody is building something. Somebody else is tearing it down. Usually somebody gets mad about that.
But they figure it out.
And I think kids need that.
They need to be bored sometimes. They need a day where Mom isn’t standing there saying, “Okay, now we’re going to do this.”
Because once they get past the “I’m bored” part, they usually come up with something way better than I would have anyway.
And the nice thing is, hopefully, Mom and Dad get to do the same.
Maybe I can listen to my audiobook. Maybe my husband gets to do whatever he wants to do. Maybe I can work on something I actually want to work on instead of something that has to be done before we leave.
Maybe I can sit down.
That one might be pushing it.
I do have four kids. 😂
But there are no expectations on boring days.
We aren’t trying to make a memory. We aren’t trying to have a fun family day. We aren’t rushing somewhere. Nobody has to have a good attitude because Mom spent money for us to do something fun and by golly, we are going to have fun.
We are just home.
Doing whatever.
And somehow those end up being some of my favorite days.
Nothing exciting happened.
And I loved it.
