Just Another Manic Monday

Today is just another manic Monday, as the song says.

But let’s just fast forward to the afternoon because that’s where things get interesting.

My older two have soccer practice from 2:30-4.

My husband is a coach.

Albeit because I signed him up to be a coach… but he also didn’t say no, so here we are.

Our plan was simple. He would take the older two to soccer since, you know, he’s the coach. I would stay home with the younger two while they napped, get dinner going, finish cleaning, maybe knock out a few other things around the house.

Great plan.

At about 10 this morning, my husband finds out he has a meeting for work.

At 2:30.

Of course he does.

And it’s one he can’t get out of.

Well.

There goes that plan.

So I called in backup.

Thankfully, Grandma was available even with my last-minute request. She came over to stay with the two littles while they napped, and off I went with the older two to soccer practice.

My husband assured me his meeting should only take about 10 minutes.

That was optimistic.

Very optimistic.

Because now I am standing in the middle of a homeschool soccer co-op as an unidentified new coach.

These children don’t know me from Adam.

Or, I guess, Eve.

But apparently they’re supposed to listen to me now.

Thankfully, the guy running the soccer co-op told me what drill I was supposed to be doing, so at least I had some clue what I was doing.

And there I was.

Coach Mom.

Running around outside with a bunch of five-, six-, and seven-year-olds.

Forty-five minutes later, my husband finally meanders his way out there.

Because heaven forbid the man rush.

So the two of us tackled the drill together for the rest of practice, and as soon as it was over, I headed straight home to relieve Grandma and figure out dinner.

My husband and the older two walked through the door about 20 minutes after me.

And you know what we’re having for dinner?

Hot dogs.

And fruit.

That’s it.

I had other plans.

Those plans are gone.

It’s hot outside, in case you haven’t noticed, and I just spent my afternoon unexpectedly running around with a bunch of small children at soccer practice.

I think I’ve earned this hot dog.

And after these kids go to bed tonight, I also think I’ve earned the couch potato I fully intend to become.

After 8 p.m., I am no longer accepting additional responsibilities.

It’s been a manic Monday.

I’ll try again Tuesday. 😂
