How Are We Supposed to Do It All?

“Were you able to finish ironing my shirt?” “Hey, Mom, I forgot to tell you, I need cupcakes for my class this afternoon!” “MOM, THE TODDLER IS FEEDING BABY A CRAYON!!!” And all this occurred in the first 30 minutes of my day. There is so much to do each day and that is before you throw in the unexpected curve balls like last second cupcakes or the baby attempting to eat a crayon. Somewhere along the way, we’ve been handed a never-ending list of things we’re “supposed” to do.

Exercise.
Eat healthy.
Prioritize our mental health.
Keep a spotless home.
Build a perfect marriage.
Pour into our children.
Be at church every time the doors are open—and volunteer whenever help is needed.
Maintain friendships.
Care for our extended family while caring for our immediate family.
And somehow… do it all with a smile.
Also, make it look effortless.
ALSO, never show that you are overwhelmed.

But…..

Who made that list?
Who told us to do all of these things?
Especially in the same day?! Be serious!

My responsibility isn’t to accomplish everything. My responsibility is to be faithful with what God has placed in front of me today. Not everything has to be finished today. The laundry will still be there tomorrow.
Today’s work is enough for today because today’s troubles are enough for today. Tomorrow can wait until tomorrow.
As Jesus reminds us, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34)
